Skiving and Hemming Technology

The key to efficient, quality production of liquid packaging cartons is the ultra-precise skiving and hemming process.

The purpose

Skiving and hemming prevents liquids from wicking into the raw edge of the fifth panel (located on the inside of the finished carton). Sealing this raw edge not only eliminates leakage, discoloration, and damage to the package, it also extends the shelf life of the product.

The process

During skiving, a high percentage of the fifth panel’s thickness is reduced by removing a thin, narrow strip of material from the panel.  A precision Fortuna skiver, mounted in the skive / hem section, performs this operation.  This computer-controlled skiver takes only minutes to set up and is easy to operate.  An integral self-sharpening system operates during actual production, eliminating routing and costly downtime.

Hemming folds the fifth panel’s edge over the skived area and creates a poly-coated, folded edge approximately the same thickness as the original board. This coated edge prevents liquid from contacting the raw carton board.

The patent

IPBM Geneva / Switzerland was granted worldwide patents in recognition of the innovative approach to this unique liquid packaging challenge. While specific skiving and hemming equipment has been improved or upgraded over the years, the same patented process is still used.
